Reflect on the Year So Far
As we step into August, many of us begin to reflect on the year so far.
Back in January, we entered 2026 with hope. We set goals, made plans, prayed bold
prayers, and believed this would be the year things would change.
Yet, for many of us, the reality has looked different.
Some goals remain unfinished. Some opportunities never materialised. Others may have experienced unexpected setbacks that forced their plans to change altogether. And for
some, life moved so quickly that goals were never written down in the first place.
Whatever your story, this moment isn't meant to remind you of everything you haven't accomplished.
Instead, it's an invitation to ask a different question.
How do we faithfully navigate the second half of the year?
Remember: It Isn't Too Late
One of the greatest mistakes we can make is believing that because something hasn't happened yet, it never will.
But God's timing isn't limited by our calendars.
The fact that a goal remains unfinished in August doesn't mean it cannot become reality before the year ends.
Rather than dwelling on what hasn't happened, perhaps the better question is:
"What is God inviting me to pursue in this next season?"
The second half of the year is not simply what's left of your year, it is another opportunity to walk faithfully with God.
Plan with God, Not Without Him
Sometimes we assume that trusting God means we shouldn't make plans.
Scripture teaches the opposite.
"We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps." Proverbs 16:9 (NLT)
Proverbs doesn't discourage planning. Rather, it assumes we will plan.
The difference is that our plans are surrendered to God rather than separated from Him.
Planning isn't a lack of faith, it is an act of stewardship. The same applies to our spiritual lives. Many of us pray for spiritual growth, but growth rarely happens without intentional habits.
As Peter writes,
"Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your
salvation.
" 1 Peter 2:2
Prayer matters.
Scripture matters.
Fellowship matters.
Growth only happens as we intentionally position ourselves before God.
You cannot leave your future to chance and expect to arrive where God is leading you.
Before You Review Your Goals, Revisit Your Purpose
But the question is, what should shape the goals we pursue?
Before reviewing your goals, spend time revisiting your purpose.
Paul could confidently tell Timothy,
"You know... my purpose in life." 2 Timothy 3:10
Purpose determines direction.
Goals simply become the practical steps that move us towards that purpose.
Rather than asking, "What do I want to achieve?"
Perhaps we should first ask, "Lord, what do You want me to do?"
This was Saul's first question after encountering Jesus on the road to Damascus (Acts 9).
When we allow God to shape our priorities, our goals become more than personal ambitions, they become acts of obedience.
Don't Let the Past Decide the Future
Sometimes our greatest obstacle is discouragement.
Perhaps you've tried before and failed which has made us become weary of waiting.
Perhaps you're tempted to believe it's too late.
But Scripture encourages us not to become prisoners of the past.
While it is important to learn from previous disappointments, we shouldn’t allow them to define our future.
Ecclesiastes reminds us,
"Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant. If they watch every cloud, they never harvest." Ecclesiastes 11:4 (NLT)
Waiting for perfect circumstances often keeps us from taking faithful action today.
How Do You Move Forward?
As we continue into the second half of the year, take time to pause.
Review your goals.
Revise them if necessary.
If you never set any goals, begin now.
As you plan, make your goals realistic and intentional. Many people find it helpful to use the SMART framework, goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound but above all, commit your plans to God.
Pray over them and listen to the Holy Spirit. Allow your goals to reflect not only what you want to accomplish, but what God is calling you to accomplish.
Finish the Year with Hope
The story of your year is not over.
There are still five months remaining.
Five months to grow spiritually.
Five months to develop new habits.
Five months to pursue opportunities you thought had passed.
Most importantly, there are still five months for God to work in ways you cannot yet see.
Remember that God is with you, for you, and within you.
As Psalm 23 reminds us, He is our Shepherd, walking with us even through the valleys. So don't allow the first half of the year to define the second.
Trust God.
Take responsibility for what He's placed in your hands.
And step confidently into all that He has prepared for you.
Take Action
This week, spend time reflecting and praying over these questions:
● What has God taught me during the first half of this year?
● Which goals need revisiting or refining?
● Is God inviting me to pursue something different?
● What one faithful step can I take this week?
The year isn't over. It’s not too late.
